Visiting Nara in October: What to Expect
October is a pleasant time to visit Nara, but it’s still too early for peak autumn colors in Nara Park. Most of the park stays green through the month, while the first autumn colors appear in the mountains.
If you visit in early or mid-October, you’ll see mostly green trees around Nara Park. By late October, some maples may start turning yellow, but the bright red colors usually don’t arrive until mid-to-late November.
October is also a good month for walking around Nara. Daytime temperatures are usually around 21°C (70°F), while evenings can drop to about 12°C (54°F), so bring a light jacket for the morning and evening.
If seeing autumn leaves is your main reason for visiting, head to higher areas such as Mt. Yoshino in late October. For the classic red-and-gold scenery around Nara Park, wait until late November.

Most of Nara’s best autumn foliage spots are within easy walking distance of Kintetsu Nara Station, so you can visit several in one day.
Nara Park & Ukimido Pavilion
Ukimido Pavilion is especially beautiful in mid-to-late November, when red maples and golden ginkgo trees reflect in Sagiike Pond. Near the Nara National Museum, you can also see Nara’s famous deer beneath large ginkgo trees.
Todai-ji Temple & Nigatsu-do
The maple-lined paths around Todai-ji usually reach their best color from November 22 to December 3. Continue up to Nigatsu-do for a great view of the autumn-colored trees and Nara City.

These two gardens are next to each other and offer a more peaceful autumn experience, with maple trees, ponds, moss, and traditional Japanese scenery. Late November is the best time to visit, especially if you want to see fallen maple leaves in Yoshiki-en.
Beyond Nara Park: More Places to See Autumn Leaves
If you have extra time, some of Nara’s mountain temples offer beautiful autumn colors earlier than Nara Park and are usually quieter.
Shoryaku-ji Temple
Known as the “Village of Autumn Leaves,” Shoryaku-ji is surrounded by thousands of maple trees. The best time to visit is usually November 12–25, making it a good choice if you arrive in Nara before the main foliage season.
Tanzan Shrine
Tanzan Shrine is one of Nara’s most impressive autumn spots, with thousands of maple trees surrounding its famous 13-story pagoda. Colors usually peak from mid-November to early December.
Hase-dera & Muro-ji
Hase-dera is known for its long covered staircase framed by colorful maple trees, with peak foliage from mid-November to early December. If you have a full day, you can combine it with nearby Muro-ji.

Nara vs. Kyoto Autumn Foliage
Nara and Kyoto offer very different autumn experiences. Nara is better for open spaces, deer, and a more relaxed walk through the autumn leaves, while Kyoto fall foliage is known for its temples, gardens, and classic autumn scenery.
If you have several days in Japan, it’s worth giving both destinations their own day. But if your schedule is tight, you don’t necessarily have to choose between them.

Nara Deer Safety & Photography Tips
Nara’s deer are wild animals, not pets. During October and November, male deer can become more aggressive, so give them plenty of space and avoid touching deer with large antlers.
If you feed the deer, use shika senbei (deer crackers) and keep your hands visible once you’ve run out. Don’t corner, chase, or grab a deer just to get a photo.
For better photos, early morning is one of the best times to visit. Around Ukimido Pavilion, the soft morning light can illuminate the autumn leaves and deer beautifully, while the park is also quieter.
Travel Tips for Autumn in Nara
November is cool and comfortable for exploring Nara, but mornings and evenings can feel chilly. Bring layers so you can adjust easily as temperatures change during the day.
-
What to wear: A light down jacket or warm coat over layers is usually enough for November. Mornings can be cold, especially if you arrive early for the autumn leaves and deer.
-
Shoes: Wear comfortable walking shoes with good grip. You’ll be walking on stone paths, temple steps, and forest trails, which can become slippery after rain.
-
Cash: Carry some Japanese yen with you. While many places accept cards or IC cards, small shops, temple entrances, deer cracker stands, and some local buses may still require cash.
-
Rain: Autumn showers can make temple paths and garden trails slippery, so a compact umbrella or light rain jacket is useful.
